Beginner question: I stacked all logs the same direction… still tonogodhime?

SameDirectionSam oops?

I told my neighbor I stacked my shiitake logs “tonogodhime,” but now I’m second guessing. I stacked them in a neat pile with the logs all running the same direction. It’s tidy and stable.

Is that still tonogodhime, or does the direction matter?

The direction is basically the defining feature. Tonogodhime alternates 90° each layer (the “log cabin”). If everything is the same direction, you’ve got a pile/row stack, not tonogodhime.

The alternating layers matter because they create gaps for airflow and let you access all sides. Same-direction stacks can work, but they don’t behave the same for moisture and harvest.\n
